I loved this and definitely needed this reminder. I can see how this energy of high maintenance bleeds into every social outing with the pressure to be put together. And honestly I’m over it (with myself) like yes, we’re not getting the hair “done”. No, that doesn’t me we have to avoid the outing all together.

Yes! It is sticking its grip into every little thing where now, you can't even hang out with friends without it needing to be "aesthetic." Thank you for reading!

This is very timely. I’m coming off a trip where an experimental hairstyle didn’t work out - fortunately my Black girl superpower is I can cornrow. Plus my nails were done so it was “fine.” I landed at home for 3 days just to get back on another plane. Now, two nails have chipped and due to sheer exhaustion I’ve been thinking I’m just gonna roll with it. But…but….but.

Thank you for putting the battery in my back bc I really don’t want to commit another 2 hours and $100+ to the nail salon.

That "but ..but" is really the part that brings us right back into the cycle! I have a similar funny story: I was travelling but left the wig I bought for my trip in my brothers car and I was otw to the airport. It was too late to get it back and all I had were straight backs (I don't look good in cornrows). All of a sudden, as someone who wears their natural hair ALL THE TIME at home, my natural hair didn't feel good enough and I was frantic. But when I got to my destination, I finally relaxed and realized...bitch you still have hair on your head, just style it. 😆 Here's to more money saved and remembering we're good enough however we show up! Thank you for reading, Sunny!

Such a good article. As others have said, it's an impossible cycle to keep up with! I had a moment for a few years where I was buying new swimsuits for every major trip I was going on and I don't even swim! Nor do I live by a body of water! So I've just collected all these swimsuits that I can only wear on the occasion that I want to look cute while standing in water lol.

The pressure to keep up with the Jones's is so real, especially when they seem to be in your immediate circle.

Thank you so much for this take, I think I'm going to share it with a few friends 💕

The amount of swimsuits I have succumbed to buying because "I already have pictures posted in that swimsuit" is an embarrassing amount. Haha so I'm right there with you! At least we've become conscious of it and can therefore be conscious about how we show up on our future trips. And awe that is so sweet of you 🫶🏿 I think a lot of us can relate to this one!

Once I made up in my mind that I can actually end the “never ending cycle” of having & maintaining “the look” I realized that A) I was never meant to look like the typical digital baddie. It’s not in my dna. And while I also won’t fall into making being natural my identity, being natural is truly just… who and how I am.

Lol at "digital baddie." Same! I have friends who are about that life and I tried following suit because, well, it seemed like that's just what you're supposed to do. But it's just not me and that's okay

I love everything about this, but I had to accept that I couldn't keep up with all the maintenance that has become the standard for vacations. I gave up! The only appointment I won't miss is getting my eyebrows threaded. Everything else is whatever to me.

It's extremelyyy difficult to keep up with! Especially if you travel fairly often. And ultimately unnecessary, unless you're paid to look a certain way on vacation so you can sell a lifestyle. Omg same, eyebrows threaded everytime and is non-negotiable. Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts!
